TATTERSALLS OCTOBER BOOK ONE UPDATES

1500: Nothing remarkable for a while until a son of Coronation Stakes and Fillies Mile winner Nannina comes into the ring. Bidding for this homebred, by Pivotal, surprisingly stalls at 130,000 and that looks a cheap purchase if he's anything as good as his pedigree.

1437: Another Cape Cross proves popular, this time a colt who is a half-brother to Finsceal Beo and Frozen Power. The bidding steadily rises to 360,000, and the hammer comes down in favour of Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock advisor John Ferguson.

1427: Lot 233 is a half-brother to Canford Cliffs, but he's by Excellent Art rather than Tagula. He's currently fourth in the list of first-season sires and this yearling was knocked down to John Warren for 210,000.

1422: The big numbers keep on coming, as Cheveley Park Stud pay 350,000 guineas for a Galileo filly. Her dam won over 500k between France and Canada for trainer Francois Rohaut and the pedigree is deep and classy.

"She's a very athletic filly, very similar to Allegretto, who we bought here in 2004," successful purchaser Chris Richardson of Cheveley Park told www.tattersalls.com.

"She's out of a dual Group/Grade 1-winning mare, from a solid pedigree and by the best stallion in the world. She needs time but we are more than happy to give her that," he continued of the daughter of Mrs Lindsay, who won the Prix Vermeille and E.P. Taylor Stakes.

Of the farm's own sales so far through Book 1, Richardson was more than happy with the results so far.

"We sold four of the first five through the ring, and were pleased with the Pivotal out of Jamboretta who fetched 215,000gns. People seem to have taken on board the farm's policy this year to sell the colts. But we are also here buying fillies and Mrs Thompson is very pleased to support the market."

1409: A stoutly-bred Galileo colt, a half-brother to Bago, fetches 200,000. He is bought back for vendor Camas Park Stud by Patrick Cooper, who is also the racing manager to Christina Patino, who runs Anamoine Limited, owners of Snow Fairy.

1356: Lot 224 is a half-sister to Regal Parade, Mount Helicon and Hot Prospect, and the bidding starts at 100,000. By the time stumps are drawn the winning bid is 500k and it's Charlie Gordon-Watson again.

This filly is from a fine family, and the fact that her dam is also in foal to Sea The Stars may have helped push the price up a bit.

The filly was bought for Craig Bennett's Merry Fox Stud.

"She will be trained by Henry Cecil," Gordon-Watson told www.tattersalls.com. "Craig just decided that he would like to buy a filly again. It is always nice to be buying for him.

"Cape Cross has produced two of the best runners in the last five years in Sea The Stars and Ouija Board, I think he is an underrated sire and does not get the credit he deserves."

Bennett has history at these sales, having paid £2.5 million for Liffey Dancer in 2007, and her three-quarters sister is Lot 502 tomorrow.

1353: A Pivotal filly is knocked down to bloodstock agent Hugo Lascelles for 240,000. Her sire has had nine individual Group/Grade One winning fillies, and this one is a full sister to Royal Lodge winner Leo.

1350: "If you didn't keep on hiding, we'd find you easier", chastises the auctioneer. He's got the patter.

1349: Now it's back to Ferguson as he goes to 160,000 for an Exceed And Excel colt, out of the successful broodmare Miss Meltemi.

1345: After a spell of fairly low sales, the pace looks to be picking up again. Charlie Gordon-Watson goes to 155,000 for a Rock Of Gibraltar colt and that's enough to seal the deal. Could he be the bloodstock agent's 10th Classic winner?

Yesterday he was acting principally for Hesmonds Stud owner Nurlan Bizakov, although the majority of his purchases were fillies as the stud look to build up their band of broodmares.

1343: A flurry of activity as John Ferguson, Shekih Mohammed's main man, picks up a Cape Cross colt for 220,000 from the family of Irish 2000 Guineas winner Bachelor Duke.

1339: And it's another for the Doyles, as Lot 216, again consigned by Yeomanstown Stud, is knocked down for 170,000 guineas. We haven't seen many Dark Angels, but he's started well this year as a first season sire, and there was interest accordingly. It looks like he might go to trainer Richard Hannon for owner Julie Wood.

1319: A first major foray into the ring on day two for Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock, as they grab Lot 207, an Acclamation colt, for 240,000. Lot 210 quickly follows for 32,000.

The former, who will go to Amanda Perrett, is a good piece of pinhooking for Yeomanstown Stud who bought him as a foal for a quarter of the price.

Peter Doyle told www.tattersalls.com: "He is a lovely colt, who is by a stallion whom we have been lucky with - we've had horses such as Lilbourne Lad, Cake, Harbour Watch, a whole raft of them!"

1311: A quiet spell, but that's broken by the purchase of a Zamindar filly for 180,000 guineas. Second dam Detroit was a class act and we all know that the Juddmonte sire can do the business, espeically with fillies, having fathered both Zarkava and Darjina. It's Blandford Stud and Tom Goff who take the plunge.

1251: Lot 197, who is from the family of Miesque and Kingmambo, slowly creeps up to 195,000. A Danehill Dancer filly, she goes to John Magnier and is one to watch out for as a three-year-old.

1240: At the other end of the scale, Lot 193, a son of Duke Of Marmalade goes for just 7,000 guineas to Fozzy Stack, son of trainer Tommy.

It's slightly surprising seeing as he's from a successful German family on the dam's side, but it should be said that the sire's stock are not being supported at all during these sales.

1232: A half-sister to Beachfire and Major Cadeaux, both rock-solid relatives, is knocked down to Cheveley Park Stud for 180,000.

Yesterday's average was £151,233, and the early signs are that it won't be much lower today. The vendors must be pleased as punch.

1224: Lot 188, an Oasis Dream filly consigned by Kirtlington Stud, fetches 150,000. Her second dam has been a successful broodmare and this nice walker looks a fair purchase by Alan Cooper, racing manager to the Niarchos Family.

1159: Angus Gold and Shadwell get in on the party, with a son of Invincible Spirit, described by the auctioneer as "very sharp and guaranteed to win on his debut", knocked down to them for 280,000 guineas.

He's from the family of Lahib, a horse dear to Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, so it's no surprise where he's gone really.

1153: The auctioneer seems to be getting a bit shirty with some reluctant bidders during Lot 176, a son of Danehill Dancer. He sounded like he wanted it for himself, but the colt eventually goes elsewhere for a neat 100,000.

1146: John Warren, Her Majesty's racing manager who also buys for Highclere, picks up a half-brother to Kevin Prendergast's Dunboyne Express for 240,000 guineas.

He's by Ravens Pass, QEII and Breeders' Cup Classic winner, and attracted plenty of interest. I wonder if the Elusive Quality bloodline will prove as popular as yesterday? The early signs, like the Man from Del Monte, say yes.

1136: Early strikes for John Magnier and John Ferguson. Coolmore supremo Magnier picks up Lot 170, a Montjeu colt, for 150,000 guineas. However Ferguson, Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock advisor, goes to 120,000 for a Cape Cross colt and then 160,000 for an Elusive Quality filly.

1130: Welcome along to day two of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Yesterday's auction topper was Lot 112, a three-parts sister to Pour Moi bought by Australian owner Paul Makin.
