Still confused over Bassett
I was more encouraged by Wootton Bassett's run in the Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville but a little disappointed he didn't go on and win too. He travelled well, took it up and I thought he'd go away and win but it didn't happen. We've had him tested and everything came back 100 per cent.
I'm a little confused with him at the moment. We were quite keen to run him at seven furlongs and a mile this year but he's in the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock and maybe we'll have a look at that now.
Two-year-olds lead the way
Lily's Angel is a wonderful, tough filly who was beaten by a very good one in the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket and you can't ask any more of her. Our two-year-olds are going really well at the moment, but the older horses are badly handicapped. They finish fourth, fifth and sixth and don't get dropped a pound and I don't know what we can do but we had five juveniles win last week which was encouraging.
Strensall option for Barefoot
I'll be back with a column for York next week and Barefoot Lady could well be running there. She'll have an entry in the Sky Bet Mobile Strensall Stakes and is also in a race at Deauville later in the month.
Saturday team:
Arley Hall got beat by a horse who was claimed out of a seller at Chester last time and subsequently got well beat in a nursery at Wolverhampton. She runs in the E.B.F. robinsonsofbawtry.com Designer Clothes Boutique Maiden Fillies' Stakes at Doncaster. Her first run was very good and the mile will suit her. She's a tough, genuine filly but her form is just a bit in-and-out at the moment. The debut reads well, the second race pretty ordinary. She was just always on her head at Chester last time and the winner was always travelling better than her, and this track will suit better.
We claim three pounds off Extraterrestrial in the VW Van Centre Handicap at Ripon. He's high enough in the handicap but will love the ground if they get the rain. If we were racing in Malton it would be heavy and the softer the better for him at Ripon.
Mr Optimistc has won four races this year and deserves a crack at the Premier League Kick Off On Skybet Mobile Handicap at Newmarket. It's a decent pot and he ran well there the other day and possibly just needed the run too.
Arctic Feeling also runs in the race and he ran respectably the last day. He's come down the weights a little and any rain would help him. I could see him running well without winning.
At this stage we've three runners in the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Handicap at Ripon. I'd be very worried about horses drawn high and if more rain came I don't think Johannes would run. He's in great order, well handicapped and drawn seven which is alright but if it got too soft I'd probably take him out and wait for York.
Out of my three I think Paul was right to choose him and I think a horse drawn low will win the race.
Mayson is making his seasonal reappearance and it will be tough for a three-year-old in against these seasoned handicappers. He's drawn 19 too.
Quest For Success is in 13 and that won't help him and realistically if we're to win the race it will be with Johannes providing the rain keeps away.
We also have three in the One Call Insurance Handicap at Doncaster. Bawaardi is badly handicapped having won twice this year. He ran okay last time and we're happy with him but the handicapper has to give him a chance.
Irish Heartbeat has been extremely disappointing. We're delighted with him at home and have stuck cheek-pieces on him to try and get it out of him. On his best form he'd be a certainty but the way he's running you can't be confident. Doncaster say they've missed most of the rain this week and it would suit him if they finally get it. He's extremely well handicapped and with a drop of rain could run a big race.
Jeannie Galloway isn't very big but is tough and genuine. I'm running her from out of the handicap and she's in very good order. Sophie Doyle is claiming three pounds off her and I've been waiting to run her off a low weight in a better race. Any rain would again help.
Our final runner on the Flat is Abdicate in the EBF Bahri Fillies Handicap at Ripon. She never had a chance at Goodwood from that draw and has won on the track here which will help. She'd have a small each-way chance.
Over at Market Rasen Cunning Clarets runs in the Champagne Lanson Rose Label N.V. Handicap Hurdle. He's very lazy and will probably need his first run of the season. He's been suffering from the handicapper since going jumping and will probably go novice chasing after this.
After Our Boy Jack won last week I'd like to give you another winning nap but it's difficult. I'll put up Irish Heartbeat each-way and hope for rain at Doncaster.
